Seed Starting for Dummies
Acquire Seeds
You can purchase quality seeds from Hoss Garden Tools or High Mowing Organic Seeds.
Acquire Growing Medium and Supplies
Seedling Tray with Dome and Heater
This kit comes with everything, the tray, 24 cell seedling insert, dome, and the heater. (LINK), you’ll still need a growing medium for this kit. You can use potting soil or buy the special growing pods.
Growing Medium
You’ll need extra growing medium cells to start your seeds in. (or you could use potting soil.) Seedling pods or cells make things much easier and mess free. (LINK)
Grow Light
You can get by placing your seedlings next to a window, but only a small percentage of the UV light passes through the window. It’s better to get a grow light for your seedlings. Here is one that has good reviews and is plug and go. (LINK)
Light Timer
The last thing you’ll need for the perfect seed propagation setup is a timer for your light. (LINK)
How To:
Place all your dry pods in the tray and add warm water so they expand. After all the water is absorbed and pods fully expanded you can now plant the seeds. They don’t have to be deep (no more than a ¼”)
Now that the seeds are planted in pods you place the tray on your heating mat in front of a south facing window or under a grow light.
With the lid (dome) on you wont need to water very often, you’re just trying to keep them moist not drenched in water all the time.
Once they have outgrown the pods (many roots exposed and grown through the pods). You will need some potting soil and small 3” plastic pots to transplant the seedlings. After they grow large enough, you can transfer to 1 gallon pots.
At this point, the plants are ready to be “hardened off”. You have to ease the young plants into the full force of the sun. So you want to transport them outside for an hour a day increasing the time every 5 days or so.
This will take a couple weeks to acclimate them fully so PATIENCE is needed. Don’t rush it or all your work could be lost if they get fried in the sun.
